[2014.12.03] How high can they possibly go?
In the wake of Rosetta´s successful space mission, NASA´s Orion capsule will make its first test flight tomorrow (07:05 on 04/12) from Kennedy Space Center on Merritt Island, Florida, travelling 3,600 miles beyond Earth on its Journey to Mars “in the Next Giant Leap into our Solar System.”

Seated southeast of Merritt Island near Cocoa Beach, Charles Bolden, ex-astronaut and current administrator of Cape Canaveral Airport Station, told CNN today: “The final objective we´re working to is to have humans on Mars by 2030.”

I´ll be 67 in 15 years and harbour no desire to travel to Mars now or in the not-so-distant ´future´.

Not that I suggest keeping our feet on the ground, being firmly in the camp supporting the recent rash of interest in skyscraper building projects.

Which is why a fascinating lecture this morning, ´The 1960s – Housing and Architecture – from single storey to streets in the sky`, was so topical.

Despite the warm drizzle, an audience of 30 listened to speaker Sheila Knight explore the highs and lows of high-rise living, from the arrival of Afro-Caribbean immigrant workers to Britain – “when little thought had been given as to where they’d be housed” – through to implementation of the radical strategy of building skywards to accommodate an increasing larger population.

The talk ended showing the role ageing tower blocks play giving a new lease of life to key cities, as growing numbers of young professionals (Uppies?) with a long-term view invest in renovated tower blocks boasting equally impressive scenic views.

Part of the University of the Third Age (U3A) programme of lectures and debates held at Lux Mundi Fuengirola in Málaga, Spain, Ms Knight´s lecture comes a year after heated public debate surrounding the possible construction of five skyscrapers in Marbella.

I´m all for tower blocks, aesthetically, environmentally and practically (I live in one). The real and possible danger of burning to a crisp in some nightmarish remake of ´The Towering Inferno´ wasn´t uppermost in my mind when a neighbour agreed to exchange my seventh floor south London flat for the breathtaking views from his on the 20th floor.

With their high concentration of cramped families, tower block dwellers were habitually looked down upon – reliant on social assistance with little (if any) choice in the location they’d end up.
In a marked difference today, appealing skylines are largely the domain of the monied.

Within days of Marbella voting against skyscraper construction, the City of London unveiled its "futurescape" of fourteen new towers coming to the capital by 2030.

And Germany announced last week that BMW heiress Susanne Klatten has taken a stake in the Frankfurt skyline, investing €350 million in a landmark new 29-floor office tower project to meet “a growing need for high-quality office space.”

High-rise living and office working are, clearly, different things, but having enjoyed both, they come highly recommended. Though I won´t be donning a spacesuit any time soon.
